CARING FOR YOUR LOVED ONE’S...EVEN IN THE AFTERLIFE

People die. That's life.

But some folks want their loved ones cared for in the afterlife, and that's when a business like Always Remember might come in handy.

For a fee, and you can learn more about that at www.alwaysremember.org, Melissa Baginski and her business partner, Diane Stanton, will water the grave, drape it in flowers, cover it with a blanket and shine up that headstone.

It's a 4-year-old business serving metro Detroit and an operation that's strange enough to warrant asking for more details. Baginski, 41, of Livonia obliged.

QUESTION: What's the oldest grave that you do work on?

ANSWER: It's like 1810 ... over in Redford.

Q: Is that right? Who is it?

A: It was the Foley family, and he was a dear customer. But he died last summer.

Q: Whose grave were you tending?

A: His wife's family.

Q: Your Web site says you handle ash disposition. I'm almost afraid to ask what that means.

A: Well, we can, but we haven't yet -- scattered ashes.

Q: But you're willing to?

A: Sure.

Q: What kind of requests do you anticipate?

A: Water burials, that's what we're thinking.

Q: Have you had any really unusual requests, like some people would place a six pack on a grave or a glass of wine, anything like that?

A: Well, there's orthodox people that you do take wine to the grave.

Q: Just a bottle?

A: Yeah. ... Nothing crazy. No one's ever grabbed me from below, but I've fallen into a grave.

Q: No! ... What do you mean you've fallen into a grave?

A: I fell into a hole.

Q: Wow! I was going to ask you if you'd ever done anything scary, like tend a grave at night under a full moon.

A: Rural Hill in Northville. That's the scariest cemetery in the world.

Q: Why?

A: It's in the middle of the woods, nowhere. And there's no light.

Q: So you take your little daughter with you on some of these things. Does she ever shriek hysterically?

A: Nooooo. ... When I fell in she was kind of laughing.

Q: What do your kids or your friends say about your business?

A: My (day-job) boss, she just can't imagine that I do it. ... She can't go to funerals, so this whole thing just creeps her out.

Q: You ever been chased by a maniacal gatekeeper with devil eyes?

A: No. Sometimes we take a dog with us. ... Some of the places aren't so nice anymore.
